Congrats Juicy and redrose on losing 5 lbs.! Bravo! Keep working hard, exercising often, eating well and the rest of the pounds will come off. I have found that simplifying things has really been successful for me. For example, I've stopped buying junk food and avoid fast food restaurants...etc I also make sure to eat decent sized poritons and have healthy snacks on hand if i get hungry. I've also just made sure to do a bit of exercise each day..so far this has been working wonders for me....
How is everyone else doing??

Way to go Juicy,
I would like to say I have lost 5 pounds also. I am so happy the weight is starting to come off. I haven't been doing a lot of exercising because of the heat and my exercise hyper tension and restrictive lung disease, but I have changed the way I am eating. Mostly vegetables, nuts, beans and a little fruit and little whole grain bread and a very small amount of meat. I was told if I lose some weight that it will make it easier for me to exercise and breathe and would put less strain on my heart plus lower my lipid levels. I am feeling better with the 5 lbs of fat off of me. It doesn't sound like much, but I can feel the difference. I am making progress and I am feeling really good about it.

Hey Juicy,
Congrats on losing 5 lbs. ! Be proud of this, and keep plugging forward! I know that it has been so hot, and the humidity put a damper on my walking routine too. But Ive been going for bike rides and doing some exercise videos at home.
You can do it too!

Hi everyone its good to hear that you are all continuing to see the pounds melt away. Congratulations. I am going to try to read up on the program here this weekend. I might just print it up and put it in a folder so that I dont have to sit here in front of the computer reading it. I did that with another program here on the site. Anyway I have cut out a lot of the wrong foods and hope to see some weight loss soon. I have been exercising every other day. I do like the exercise. Brenda good going on the 37 pounds and good deal on the 10 lbs. I will be real happy when I see a 10 pound loss on the scale. I have only been off cigarettes for 33 days now so it may take a while. Thats what I am thinking any way so I am trying to be patient and not to hard on my self.

It is so nice to hear that everyone is more or less reaching their goals. I cant wait to see my doctor toward the end of next month. I should be down about 35-37 pounds from when see last saw me at the end of March.

It does feel good. Doesnt it, bumblebee? There are so many temptations, and eating right can not be done perfectly, but it can be done well. I realize that even though I sometimes get tired of cooking my own meals, I get so much more out of doing so. I eat better. I squeeze more food into fewer calories. The food I cook is low in salt and high in all of the vitamins and minerals, including the omegas. And with a treat of a cafe mocha decaf that I make for myself several times a week I get my chocolate and sweet fix. Anyhow both chocolate and coffee are good for us too. I thought I would die giving up sweets, but as Ive realized just how empty the calories are Ive been reluctant to put them in my diet. Its been harder for me to give up fast food and I think thats because McDonalds is near the gym and because I do tire of cooking and am really hunry when I leave the gym, especially on Wednesdays.

Hey redrose and Brenda,
I enjoyed reading through this thread. I am glad you have started this program redrose! Living a happy and healthy life is way worth exercising and watching what you eat! I have been feeling really great lately. I have cut out bad foods and will treat myself on occasion without going overboard. Just by cutting out bad foods and controlling my portions a bit more I have lost 7lbs. in 2 weeks!
We can all do it!

Good morning Brenda,
Thank you for the information and feedback on the diet. I am growing zucchini squash, cucumber and tomatoes in my garden the year so the Mediterranean or low carb diet would work good with all the vegetables. I did low carb a few years back and lost weight but I really missed my whole grains. I will definely look up the Mediterranean diet online. It sounds very good and I do like the whole grain pasta and of course all my veges. I feel much better both physically and mentally when my blood sugar level arent going up and down all the time. I carry raw vegetables/fruit or raisins and nuts with me to have after my walk in case I get to feeling weak. I am with you on the menopause thing. I myself am post menopausal and have been for 5 yrs now. I have started to gain weight the last 3 years. My Dr. did say that it would be harder to loose weight now and I would be doing good to maintain my weight. Plus stopping smoking would make it harder. He does have a bit of a negative attitude. I think it is great that you are getting a head start on your new healthy life style. Your story is very inspiring and I hope to follow in your footsteps to a new and healthier life style and drop a few pounds. Your positive attitude is refreshing. I am sure it can be done in spite of the Drs. negative attitude. I havent seen him in over a year. Ill see him if I have to. He did say it would be good if I quit smoking and started eating a healthy diet and doing some moderate exercise. So I have quit smoking and here I am starting to work on the diet and exercise now. I have been looking forward to working on this. I look forward to hearing from you again and reading about your progress.

Hi redrose. Most of the classes at the Y are included in the membership fee. They have open pool times, and then, of course, classes. The classes cost, bu they will give a scholarship for an individual class if needed. They have a class here call Aquacize. Its designed for people with arthritis, MS, and other medical issues. Yoga, pilates, madflex, aerobic, cycling, and conditioning classes are all free.
You might want to google the Mediterranean diet. I originally thought I would switch to a low-carb diet, because my blood sugar levels ran high. They arent running high anymore, but as I read about the various diets, I became convinced that actually eating carbs would be good even for the diabetes. Apparently, whole grains are absorbed more slowly and therefore do not spike blood sugar levels much. Plus, its difficult to follow an eating plan if youre hungry all of the time. Whole grain carbs are filling. The emphasis is on portion control, lots of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, nuts and/or seeds, fish. Also, two servings of diary per day. Yogurt is good. Because you dont overeat, your blood sugar level is kept in check. I use olive oil sparingly (because of the calories), but use cooking sprays and Smart Balance butter substitute a lot. Grains, vegetables, omega-3 (fish)--all will help bring down your cholesterol and keep it in check.
Exercise also brings it down. I never had high cholesterol or blood pressure, but I can tell you that both have dropped since I started working out and so has my pulse rate. When I smoked my heart use to beat at 92 beats per minutes (fast normal). Now it beats at about 69. It dropped 10 beats after I quit smoking. The rest of the drop is due to exercise. Im becoming well conditioned. My bad cholesterol is lower--104. (The doctor says I may have inherited low cholesterol.) My good cholesterol is higher 48. (Im menopausal, so I no longer have the estrogen protection). Having a HDL reading in the high 40s is good.
